Links - resources - websites As a pre-service teacher, gathering suitable resources for students is essential. Below you will find online resources you may find useful when teaching music. They have been placed in alphabetical order. Arts Alive <http://www.artsalive.ca/en/> Have you ever wanted to interview members of an orchestra? Do you like creating dance moves to music? You can now bring these experiences into your classroom. Arts Alive is a bilingual performing arts education website providing resources for music, English, theatre and dance. It has been created by Canada's National Arts Centre to allow teachers and students access to some of the world's greatest performing arts and artists. Dallas Symphony Orchestra <http://www.dsokids.com> The Dallas Symphony's magical doorway provides students, teachers and parents, with a world of musical fun and learning. The site's primary mission is to provide attractive child-friendly resources that introduce symphonic music, orchestral instruments and composing, as well as allowing students to explore their online musical environment. Teachers also have their own private lounge on this website which provides a list of valuable resources for teachers. Jam2Jam <http://www.explodingart.com/jam2jam.html> Jam2Jam is a new innovation in music making, providing musicians of all ages with opportunities to experiment with computers and music. Designed by Andrew Brown, Andrew Sorensen and Steve Dillon, the program generates music that you can control while it plays. Jam2Jam allows you to jointly make music with friends like a band, without the need for instrumental skills. Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Family Series <http://www.laco.org/family_concerts/> This site is an excellent site for introducing young children to the musical orchestra. The page is a little bare right now, because the programming for the series hasn’t been announced, but it does include a list of upcoming concerts, and each concert page will talk about the instrument petting zoo and the other fun interactive activities that we have at our family concerts. MayDay Group <http://www.maydaygroup.org/index.php> The MayDay Group is an international community of scholars and practitioners, founded by Thomas Regelski and J Terry Gates in 1993. The group operates as an international think tank for those concerned with music education. On this website you will find online forums discussing key issues in music education, useful resources and links to the online e-journal Action, Criticism and Theory for Music Education. You can also hear online audio files of leading thinkers related to music education and culture. Morton Subotnick's Creating Music <http://www.creatingmusic.com> Creating music.com is a children's online creative program designed for children of all ages. Children have the opportunity to compose music, play with different musical performances, and play musical games and musical puzzles. Each activity is designed to improve the musical skills of children. For example, the puzzles are designed to improve musical listening by breaking down the melody into four phrases. Musica Viva in Schools Zone <http://www.musicaviva.com.au/vivazone/> This site is an integrated music education program from the Musica Viva In Schools program. Children can experiment with sound in the studio, create a webpage, design an ultimate concert, explore a day in the life of a musician and investigate a large range of musical instruments. Children can learn about different instruments in the orchestra, meet musical conductors, learn to play musical instruments and explore different sounds through sound adventures. San Francisco Symphony Kids <http://sfskids.org> Created by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, this online website provides many interactive musical experiences for children. Children can learn more about different notes, different instruments, send musical postcards and experiment with composing in the music lab. Children can easily navigate between the different sections of the site. Sound2Picture <http://81.179.47.224/s2p/www//> Sound2Picture is a multimedia resource designed to help teach students about film music. It was produced by UCan.tv working with Manchester Metropolitan University, to create a range of copyright free digital video and audio materials, including extensive teaching notes. This resource can be used on a PC or MAC, and can be freely used on all networked computers within the purchaser's institution. |
